32-bit Ubuntu 8.10 and Toshiba Satellite A215-S4767 Notebook
In this post, I will be explaining how my installation of the 32-bit Ubuntu 8.10 OS went on my Toshiba Satellite. The specs of my laptop can be found in the “Getting Started with Ubuntu” post I had last month but just to sum it up; this is a Vista compatible machine that I bought fall of ‘07. It has an AMD chipset and Atheros wi-fi built-in.
I installed Ubuntu from a live cd that I created by burning the ISO image file - downloaded from ubuntu.com - and burned with an image burning program like ImgBurn. It is dual-booting with Vista (which I’ll have removed by the end of the day hopefully). I would go into the installation process but there is a plethora of How-Tos across the web on how to install Ubuntu just the way you like. Patrick Norton of Tekzilla explains everything on his video webcast. Check it out, it’s a great show.
The only issues I had with Ubuntu 8.10 involved my wi-fi adapater. I had to follow a tutorial on getting Atheros chipsets working with Ubuntu on a Compaq C700 notebook. the tutorial can be found at gerry.ws or by clicking here. He has a few in-depth tutorials covering what you need to about Ubuntu and laptops.
In one of my upcoming posts, I’ll have information on how the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 8.10 is running on my 3 year old HP Workstation xw9300.
